Why ten, rather than, say, one or two? Are they all of the same design?

I don't believe anyone uses them to perform operations or quality assurance
on products before they leave a factory. (Excluding sampling.)

You'll find them in labs, of course. Semiconductor industry uses them for
various purposes. AFMs tend to be the tool of choice over STMs when it
comes to imaging in the biosciences, though.
