The Foresight Institute lists six "critical challenges which humanity
faces:"
1. Meeting global energy needs with clean solutions
2. Providing abundant clean water globally
3. Increasing the health and longevity of human life
4. Maximizing the productivity of agriculture
5. Making powerful information technology available everywhere
6. Enabling the development of space

I've occasionally wondered why the amelioration of poverty is not
considered by the Foresight Institute a "critical challenge to humanity." I
would think the impoverished, who have almost no toe-hold in the world's
economy, could partake of clean energy, clean water, bountiful agricultural
products, and so on. Why isn't the reduction of poverty on that list?
