[Moderator's note: I'm approving this, but can we move this firmly in the
direction of nanotechnology, please? --JSN]

The Fermi level is defined as the location where the probability of
occupation is 0.5. In a semiconductor, the Fermi level is in the middle of
the band gap.

The conduction band is the energy level above the valence band. The valence
& conduction band are separated by an amount know as the energy gap.
