The word was not very vague when K. Eric Drexler coined it.
Since then, lots of people who are interested in calling their work
"nanotechnology" have made the word more and more vague.
The glossary of "Nanosystems", a book too many people haven't read,
says:
"[...]As introduced by the author, a technology based on the ability
to build structures to complex, atomic specifications by means of
mechanosynthesis[...]"
