Well I guess we see the fairly distant future rather differently.
Though I imainge you description of nanotechnology is closer to the
present, but I think that any economically revolutionary nanotechnology
would not involve micro factories producing nanobots because of the
loss of energy and economic benefit. There may be certain small one
off jobs that only a tiny thing can do it and you only need a few, but
I still think that self replication and self organisation will be the
essential key.

The way I invision a working Diamond Age, say around 2120, things will
be build out of trillions and trillions of nanos in what Iam M Banks
calls "dust". Say a structure will be build of these self replicating
self organising nanobots to clean a area the size of an Ameircan state
of toxic waste, or to build a arts centre which will change with the
performance.

The entire world will become fluid, responsive, and smart, and this
will require such mass productions that factories will be outdate, the
nanobots will need to reproduce.

But in 30 years time I imagine your vision is more likely.
