So you have millions of little things which create a tiny factory
complex for making the little bots, which seems wasteful to me, and
still you have the same problem.
Self reproduction just makes so much economic sense. You start with a
few and they can create a entire mass complex with energy and material
available, they can become as large or small as need be, and transport
costs are low.
I don't assume that it is the only way of doing thing, but it makes a
great deal of sense to me to do it this way, though the issue is
certainly an open one.
