"Except where self-replication is designed in as a necessary part of
the
solution. The question is, how much of the self-replication process is
needed for exponential assembly? Exponential assembly is needed to
make
things cheaply and quickly."
There could be self-replication, or some kind of queen nano-machine
which pumps out little machines like ants. I think this is probably
the safest to insure since the nanobots themselves would be unable to
reproduce and could be given a limited life span and entirely
biodegradable. And you only need to fully monitor the entire end to
end of the queen machine alone.
Bringing them in little boxes would take more energy than the work of
the machines and would only be of value for very important little jobs.
