My math is boken.

Okay lets think about it. I have a factory that makes tiny non-bots in
New York and I need to use them in India. Now lets assume the Energy
of production in a factory is half the energy of self replication.
Lets say one kJ vs 2kJ or energy.

Okay now lets moves our little bots. Anyone who has moved things
around can tell you that smaller fragile things are much harder to move
than normal size things, and it will probably be fairly hard to move
say a trillion of these things, either you let a lot of them break,
therefore you lose most of your saving and must add a movement energy
for each unit, which since they need to be stored and preserved in
special systems (just imagine they need to be kept at low
temperature?). Its just easier to IMHO to let them make their little
selves.

Computers are very good at counting, they are *** at estimating. You
get a typical nana-bot job of removing heavy metals from a massive
water system in say China and collecting the metals in to an area, then
processing them to productive save use with solar energy. You have a
guess where the chemcial are and how many, but it would be better to
simply grow billions of small devices until they find the environement
tells them the levels are too low, then the move and need to make the
machines, or transform themselves, to devices that can collect the
material and collect sun ligth to come together and form a small
factory.

Self reproduction is a serious risk and the entire story of the
nano-age will likely be wieghing this risk against the full potential
of self reproduction.
