This seems to be what I would call the ant model, where some
factories/queens can produce massive numbers of nanobots and reproduce
themselves, assuming that they can not make bots while they
self-replicate and this will take time.
The advantage of this is security, you can put a lot of checks on your
factory/queens and potentially track them with future better computers.
Some tasks may require much fast level of reproduction.
Nano-technology working in the solar system may need to create
trillions of trillions to clean the orbit around the earth of all the
pollution we are putting up there, to mine comets for water, or to
avoid a strike on the earth.
