A mother/queen/ant factory will almost certaintly reproduce at a slower
rate than a self-replicating nano-bot system.
I am thinking that these small things won't be able to do much unless
you get billions very fast.
As for space, I think this is where nano-bots will make their great
contribution to humanity. A tiny swarm of nanos able to reproduce when
it finds resources, each wieghing a couple nano-grams could be
accelerated towards the speed of light, or atleast much closer than a
ship. So it is my opinion that nano techs, moving very fast through
vast space and then reproducing when they find a lot of materials, is
how humanity will explore space in time spans that will make it
possible for it to happen in human attention span.
