Direct stimulation of the retina by electrical contact or light output
might work. It might also cause what is left of the retina to
degrade. Providing a stimulation without interfering with the nerve
connection pathways underneath might be a problem. Microsurgery, and
a mapping of the fibers on the optic nerve, might be the best way to
go. Remember, if you cut a nerve fiber, there may be some
difficulties in getting it to grow back from whatever is the still
living part of that nerve cell.
In theory, it might be that /partially sensate retina/,/no effective
retina but optic nerve/, and /no optic nerve/ might be handeled in
different ways. For the /no optic nerve/ category, perhaps an
electrical grid patch could be fitted over the occipital lobe without
any direct entries being made into the occipital lobe itself?
Conductance and distortion of the signal from the cerebrospinal fluid
might be a problem. Maybe the best of non-allergenic or degenerative
implant materials might get rid of the contact or nerve connection
problem.
The problem might still have to be solved for the /no effective retina
but optic nerve/ category, and would probably be subject that would be
more directly reserached as a vital phenomenon in the field of /spinal
injury paralysis/.
