My recollection is not very detailed, but I believe that Kodak would
use a slab of float (soda) glass between the bulb and condensor optics
to reject (heat thermal radiation) in the circular tray slide
projectors. The float glass would get hot but had little internal
stress as it as not worked (grind and polished) after annealing. The
uniform thickness also made it less proned to internal stress as it
cooled more uniformly over its volume. Also, if it did fail, it was a
lot cheaper to replace.
