what is a firewire ?

Can anyone explain me what a firewire is ?

I believe that this device is used to connect a CCD camera to a
monitor. But what is its purpose ? (to transform electric signal into
appropriate video signal ?)

Do you know any interesting tutorial on this subject, or on video
signal ?
