The usual answer to this is, that every eye has little aberrations
(irregularities) and for example when the tear film is not present,
distortions will occur (tear film evens out the surface of cornea). Or,
focus may suffer a little if you're tired and your accomodation doesn't
fully work (but nothing to worry about). These explanations are true, but
don't really tackle the problem of how starburst itself is forming which is
what I'm interested in.
