Were you thinking of buying nice and stylish Giorgio Armani sunglasses?
Some time ago I have purchased a pair of Giorgio Armani sunglasses.
I have been assured that both the frame and the glass were of the best kind.
Real crystal glass with an anti-reflective coating and a full warranty!
As an old photographer I knew I wanted to have the best optics in the world
and if the frame could be nice I was willing to pay for it whatever it
costs.
My joy was very short lived. Just one month later I have noticed a fine
mesh of scratches on the inside of the lenses. Their circular shapes
indicated that they were from wiping. But how?
I have never wiped my glasses. I wash them. Yes, this is what I have
learnt from a fried who wears correction glasses. A drop of mild soap and
plenty of running water. Yet, this was not good enough.
While in Italy, I went to see an optician. He had a close look and decided
there had to be something wrong with the coating. Although I have bought
my glasses in the Netherlands, he said he was willing to handle the
complaint for me. I told him I was leaving next day and that I did not
expect any trouble in claiming it back home.
The manager of the shop where I bought my glasses also agreed and assured
me he would have them fixed and I could collect them in a week or two.
A month later he sadly informed me that the Luxottica agent (they produce
the Giorgio Armani sunglasses) decided that this was not covered by the
warranty. However, the shop manager decided he was not giving up and
would send my glasses directly to the importer - Luxottica BV. The importer
however decided that since he has imported thousands of sunglasses and
never heard about such a complaint, then it was surely my own fault.
Three months later I have got my glasses back - with the anti-reflex
coating so soft that you can scratch it with the finger nail. Try this if
you want on your camera lens, you will not manage.
During my last trip to Italy I went once again to an optician - a different
one this time. He had a look, agreed with me and told me he was sorry
but I'd have to contact Luxottica myself. So, I did. I thought, they would
listen but no. They only told me to contact their agent (the importer) in
the Netherlands.
Here I gave up. I don't care any more. I guess I'll just dish out again
for a new pair of sunglasses if I can only be sure they don't come from
Luxottica. They have apparently taken over the most popular brands.
My favourite Ray-Ban's, - I still have an old pair - were also taken over
and now they don't come with Baush and Lomb glasses anymore and
there's not much more left.
So, be warned. Think twice before you walk into a shop to by your new
shades. They might come from Luxottica and then... you're on your own.
