take a magnifying glass (nominally 50mm FL, but most any will work)
focus on the outermost lens surface
using a steady hand, start moving the magnifier closer to the camera, and
the lens surfaces will come into focus one after another
When you get to the dirty surface, you'll be able to see it
Count the surfaces as you go, and you should be able to get a pretty good
idea of where the dirt is located.
