I've used an expensive Sun 19" LCD as an external monitor on my Mac
laptop for several years. When it first arrived, I hooked it up; turned
it on; went thru all the settings; it worked beautifully. Went outside
in the sun, came back in 20 minutes, it had gone all to hell -- laptop's
own display still fine, video mirrored display on the monitor a muddy
brown mess. Turned everything off and back on; went through all the
settings again, monitor and laptop; nothing helped. Thought, "Oh, hell
-- infant mortality".
Then I took off the polarizing sunglasses I'd put on when I went
outside . . .
Subsequently talked with the Sun product manager for the monitor about
the observation; they'd never even thought about it. Have since noticed
that the LCD credit card swipe-and-sign gadgets in some 7/11s have the
same problem. Mac laptops are polarized at 45 degrees; you don't even
notice the 3 dB difference in brightness between sunglasses and no
sunglasses.
