Such an dark/bright effect ist often found using PSD sensors.
The light distribution on the PSD may reach the borders of the sensor.
So the clipped parts are of different importance at different signal
levels.
Whith a CCD sensor one could actually determine the maxima of the
distribution while the PSD averages.
