Hi

as a Swiss citizen I may be qualified to discuss about watches and
sapphires ;-)))

There are two applications in watches:
1 bearings in mechanical watches
2 scratch free cover glass

The big mass of sapphire is used for the 2nd applications. It's used in
higer prized watches although the costs of one such glass (formed &
polished) might be in the range of 10 to 20$.

The big advantage of sapphire is the very flat transparancy from UV up
to about 6 micrometer. I used them as IR windows, 1/2" windows might be
a few $ only.

I know that plastic watch "crystals" seem to use the plastic's springiness
to hold it onto the watch. I presume that sapphire watch crystals are much
stiffer. How are they attached to a watch?
