Hi,
It has been a long time since I posted this offer, but anyone in the
UC system (University of California) or the Cal State University
System can have the latest version of my Optical Design and Analysis
Program (KDP-2), simply by emailing me and asking for a copy. This
includes unlimited user support. National Labs owned or run by these
organizations are included. The FREE offer includes full program
source code. There is no time limit on this offer.

This looks like a really desperate marketing action.
Jim, you should reconsider your business model.
In ten years you are out of business, everybody knows this.
You must give a long term vision, means: prepare your exit.
Maybe you could provide a open source ray-trace library
(which survives you) with commercial support.
Have a look at this:

You really don't know much about my intentions with respect to KDP-2.
I have no intention of using KDP-2 free to UC or CSU to market
anything. I learned a lot while in both systems and I simply wanted to
offer them the fruits of my efforts so that someone could get some
good out of what I have done.
I have always made KDP-2 (sans source) available to schools for
teaching. The offer to the UC and CSU systems includes source, user
support and continued access to future versions.
I can't be responsible for how the other optical design program
vendors deal with free and paying customers and I can't be responsible
to you for your understanding (or the lack of it) of my motives.
If you wish to think I am making a feeble motion to market a dying
program, go for it. Whatever makes your day.
So far in the last week, I have had one request from UC and one from
another university and they now have the full program to use and I
feel like I did something to make the world of optical design a
slightly better place. Since that makes me feel good, I sleep good at
night and enjoy what I do every day.
Unless I step in front of a bus (figuratively speeking), I plan for
KDP-2 to be around a long time and to be the best low cost optical
design program (or in the cases where I deem it, FREE) that is
available anywhere in the world.
I also make the source version available FREE to amateur astronomers
via ATM clubs via a post on another news group.
I don't know why I feel I need to explain myself or my life to a total
stranger. Maybe it is just too early in the morning and I'm not awake
enough.
What ever happened to the great OSOD program ? Did it ever make it
past the personal bickering stage ? It did seem like a good idea.
There are quite a few great OS softwares including compilers.
Cheers,
Jim Klein
