Of course, the ZnSe I am familiar with is made by CVD. Are there older
processes for growing CVD that might give significantly different density
(4.49 vs. 5.29) and color?
Raytheon were the first to make CVD (chemical vapor deposition) zinc
selenide and zinc sulphide. CVD (after winning a patent fight) then
became the only real source for the material. This was in the late
1970s.
As far as I know there have been no significant changes in density
since those days. The process for making the material does not allow
for the existance of lower density material, as this would
significantly affect the material's physical properties.
