Accousto-optical devices act like variable gratings but are not like
variable refractive index materials.

There was a device made by Hughes (?) before the GM aquisition that was
called a light valve (I think). It was developed for the military.
The purpose was to take a normal image and use it to phase modulate a
device to allow coherent image processing.
