And how were the refractions performed w/o calculations?

This is the point. As I know the technique you draw circles of
diameter representing the index of refraction from the location where
the ray meets the surface in question. Scale the graphs up really
large and you dont have to be that accurate with angles or you improve
your accuracy.
It may be just folklore, but it does make logical sense, I would just
like to see some photos or talk with an old school person who might
have been holding the chalk lines on the big hangar floor.
