Thank you, Richard
I know what you talk about, love math too, and smooth analytical "nice"
functions in between.
I spent some time in the library, following the links referring to Zeidel
(who was mentioned as the author of even-power decomposition). I tried to
find physical background of decomposition, even in case of an idealized
system. But even under most restrictive assumptions, even powers don't work.
Even if a thin lens or paraxiality are assumed (having nothing to do with
real, especially wide-angle systems), no. The corresponding math is pretty
simple, any engineer can derive it.
(I respect Zeidel anyway).
I am going to make a simpe investigation on distortion in real life. Theory
will be based on ray-tracing, practice on actual calibration. Plan to finish
this work in a week.
Would you like to review it?
No obligations of course. You are seem to be the only one who is interested
in this matter. Surprisingly! I thought, accurate calibration would attract
many practical people's interst.
All the best,
Sasha

Rotationally symmetric by itself does not mean only even powers at all.
True. But, I also said "nice" even powers. That precludes
discontinuous distance and derivatives.
