times the rated rms voltage, in this case 650 * 1.414 = 919 volts using
a half wave or bridge rectifier.

Yes, in fact, 900 V is probably somewhat high for long life.

I really should add a Variac to that schematic....

As luck would have it I do have an old Metro Logic HeNe laser
somewhere packed away. I'll see if I can dig it out. You mentioned
it would work if it had a "shutoff circuit". Is there an example in
the FAQ anywhere or elsewhere?
