Can anyone point me towards references regarding the design of contact
lenses? I am interested in the complete product from optical design
to materials to biology. Are there any useful books or landmark
papers?
The book "Optics of the Human Eye" mentions one paper:
Atchison, D. A., "Aberrations associated with rigid contact lenses",
JOSA A 12, 2267-73 (1995).
The book mentions that spherical aberration is the major aberration, and
since the rear surface must match the curvature of the cornea, lens
bending to alleviate the aberration is not possible. Aspherizing is the
usual solution.
If useful another paper may be of use:
Atchison, D.A., "Spectacle lens design: a review", Applied Optics 31,
3579-85 (1992).

The references are fairly old but should still be useful. Thank you
very much.
