I would expect some elongated ellipsoid.
So would I. With extended polishing I may be getting one. (Some
specialised plastic ploish I ordered arrived this morning). It still
seems very "speckly" as if it is interacting with the material in some
unforunate way. But maybe I spent too much time looking at electron
diffraction patterns in my youth.
A cylindrical lens won't give a nice laser line.
Oh. That is disappointing. Could you explain why? It seems that the line
generator in my cheap laser level is a cylindrical lens (or 1D parabola,
I suppose). I wasn't expecting a perfectly constant intensity all the
way accross the wall.
