A telescope would do it, in principle. In practice you probably can't
get one to focus close enough.

I know that the optical systems in travelling microscopes
( http://www.educationscience.com/microscope/physical.htm for an
example) will focus at the distance you require.

However, your best bet is probably to borrow a video camera and zoom in.
