Diode Laser, Quarter Wave Plate and a Linear Polariser

..... sounds like the start of a joke :)
How can the latter two be used to stop feedback into the laser? My
first thought was that you'd put the linear polariser infront of the
laser with the its transmission axis matching the natural linear
polarisation of the diode laser. This linear polarised light would
then be incident on the QW plate, which would turn the light to
circularly polarised. So that any reflected light back from a lens
would not be transmitted though the linear polariser protecting the
Diode laser. However, I forgot about the reversibility of optical
system so the reflected circularly polarised light would be turned
back into linear polraised light by the QW plate awhichwould then be
allowed thourhg the linear polariser...
Can anyone help me get this right? What am I missing... How can this
be made a one way system?
Thanks
Alex
