Hi,
Advice from anyone please.
Without falling for the lines of the "listing" companies that promise
for a year to get your sight listed on the first page of a multi-page
response to a search, how should I go about getting my web site
properly listed and placed.
For example, if someone searched for "optical design software" I'd
like to get off the 50th page and get up near ZEMAX, CODE-V, OSLO and
ACCOS-V.
Since I'm working this full time, doing a lot of typing and submitting
once a year is not a problem for me as it was when I could only work
after hours when I was all ready burned out from 8 hours at the day
job and 2 hours on LA's fine freeways.

Google seems to work differently to the other search engines. On most
engines if I search for optical engineering with either consultant or
Michigan I get fairly highly ranked. However, on Google I'm nowhere
to be seen.
One strategy that seems to have worked reasonably well for me is to
include as much relevent text on my home page as possible. This is
generally difficult to do and still maintain a readable and well
structured web site. I have got arroud this by having extra links
which include text lists. (see www.richardfisher.com). The site
would look better without them but it certaonly helps with search
engines.
It is also good to have as many links to your site from others as
possible. I found that adding my web to messages on this forum seemed
to raise me in the listings considerably. (This is the reason I list
my site, not for advertising.)
I also think it is important to have some geographical imformation in
your web. potential customers will often include in their search
California, San Fransisco, bay area etc.
As I mentioned before, Google Adwords is a wonderful way to give you
visability for very little cost.
Good luck
