hacking DVD player optical detector

Does anyone know how to use the detector in a DVD player as a general
purpose optical detector?
Since the old OPT101 chips aren't available anymore, this may be a
decent alternative.

If not, I'll post what I found out here.

I know how to use SiPDs with op amps, but the integrated approach is
very convenient.
