Bill Hobba is a fairly intelligent and reasonably well-educated
devotee of relativity theory. Why is he so obviously confused
about superluminality?

Your proof is obviously erroneous. It's perfectly consistent to
believe in the Lorentz transformation equations and superluminal
velocities if one adopts an absolute frame of reference. That's
a very respectable means of escape.
