Since on
http://mathworld.wolfram.com/MinkowskiMetric.html
(where he writes the same equation for (dtau)^2) he defines tau
as "proper time" and since x^0 is obviously the time coordinate
t, he should have written:
(dtau)^2 = (dx^0)^2 - (dx^1)^2 - (dx^2)^2 - (dx^3)^2
or not talk about proper time at all, and write
(ds)^2 = - (dx^0)^2 + (dx^1)^2 + (dx^2)^2 + (dx^3)^2
And while we're at it, in stead of
"i is the imaginary number sqrt(-1)"
he had better written
"i is the imaginary number (such that i^2 = -1)"
but that's another -boring- story.
