Alistair:
The strong interaction has gluons that can become quarks with mass!
Electromagnetism can be the answer in other cases because I
am postulating that all particles are made of charges and
all particles have substructure. The origin of mass in my view is
a process in which negative and electric charges in photons and gluons
( charges much smaller than the standard coulomb charge of 10^-19 C)
redistribute themselves so that there are local net charges
like quarks and positrons and electrons.
