The best book for the layman that I can think of about this is a small
book by Feynman called QED, ISBN: 0691024170.

However, I don't even think this book contains the answer to your
question. To learn where that comes from, I believe you need know how
to do the calculations, and then you're going to need to read a fair
number of non-layman books.
