LHC and Higgs

I was reading an article about the LHC at CERN.
Apparently, its purpose is to search for the Higgs boson.

How will they recognize it, if it appears?
Is the Higgs field a field, like a magnetic field,
or something else?

What if Peter Higgs had died in infancy?
