Should we derive concept out of a mathematical equation or should we
apply maths to concept? Former can mislead us. Here is a small
example. ('Flux linkages and electromagnetic induction' by L.V.Bewley)
        Consider a transformer core with round cross section. Equation
for emf is,
             e = - d(N)(fi)/dt
      Normally we have fixed number of turns N. If N is also variable
then,
             e = -(fi) d(N)/dt – (N) d(fi)/dt
      Where fi is the instantaneous value of the magnetic flux in
the core. If we keep the value of flux constant then we get,
             e = - (fi) d(N)/dt.
        Bewley actually conducted an experiment to measure e when flux
was kept constant. Arrangement was made to rotate an insulating
cylinder, placed on the core limb. Bare conductor end was fixed to a
brass ring at one end and the wire was fed from a spool. Groves on the
cylinder kept off turns from touching each other. When cylinder was
rotated, there was continuous increase in the number of turns. Emf was
measured at brushes, one on the ring and other on the wire coming from
the spool. No emf was observed.
        But the electrical circuit was continuously subjected to the
change in flux linkage. Such an apparent change in the flux linkage
cannot generate emf. There is no change in the magnitude of flux in
its own frame and no mechanism by which magnetic energy can be
transferred to the charges in the surrounding circuit. Relative motion
does not play any part in the real world.
