A minor point, but a Ph.D. in any science from any school worth having
one from DOES demonstrate that the holder is capable of doing real
scientific work. All schools worth going into a doctoral program at
REQUIRE a research project to complete the thesis, and the fact is the
thesis is the thing that makes or breaks getting your Ph.D. No
thesis, no Ph.D. (Same thing goes for M.Sc.'s at schools with
worthwhile graduate programs, too. Of course, there is literally
nothing more boring that a thesis. I should know, I had to read a
master and the subsequient doctoral thesis back when I was in my first
year as a research assistant in university. The doctoral thesis was
the only thing that I've ever read that has actually put me to sleep
purely from the tedium of reading it. And I was actually interested
in the material.)
