It makes perfect sense to me.
Hammond got tired of your pesky questions, so now he has to deflect them with
what he may think is a clever counter-argument, but we all see as a weak attempt
to change the subject. If you keep on it he will reply that the subject is not
important.

He's going to do it by attempting to insult your intelligence. Once he thinks
he's convinced everyone standing by that his challenger has the mentality of a
second-grader, he will declare that the challenger is not worth wasting his time
on.

The problem is that it's easier to insult people who ask questions than to
actually answer them. For instance, in the debate about homosexuality, he posted
the same non-answer at least half a dozen times, as though that diatribe
actually explained anything. When I started asking him specific questions about
it, he went off on several tangents at once, trying to change the subject to
something he thought I didn't know anything about.
He can't communicate his ideas. Whether that's because he's a kook and doesn't
really have anything or because he's a brilliant but crusty old fart lacking in
respect for others* is entirely beside the point. If he can't explain his ideas
to others, they're worthless.
*I must point out that I feel constrained to limit my conversation to the level
of politeness established by Hammond himself.

He won't. He can't. Any debate in which he senses that you may actually know
anything more than he, he will try to short-circuit by changing the subject or
insulting you.
