Peer review is not corrupted. It is not perfect either. Even
top scientists once in a while have their papers rejected.
But it is the best system we have.

[And when I follow some discussions in this NG about the
apparent failure of peer-review, than I am in fact happy that
we have it.]

If you have a good paper and if you think you need to have
it peer-reviewed, go to another journal. If your work is
acceptable, it will be published, eventually.

At least in the western world nobody is executed, or threatened
with execution, even not for the most "unworthy" ideas.

As to the honesty of referees and politicians. So you think politicians
are generally dishonest? Well maybe they are, maybe they are not.
I don't think it is fair to judge a whole group in such a way.

But the referees of journals usually don't have an interest in having
a good paper turned down [it occurrs once in a while, but I guess
seldom for truly dishonest reasons]. Remember, referees usually
don't get payed for their efforts. This explains alot. And the
"compensation money for personal suffering" - in German
"Schmerzensgeld" - for the editors of science journals most
likely is much too low, given what I have seen in this NG...
