The best advice I can give to someone with A-level math is to go on
to university and study math. Then you'll see the answer for yourself.
Remember that an equation is shorthand for what would otherwise be
a paragraph, and is a convenient way of expressing an idea.

Einstein statement:

ds^2 = -dX_1^2 -dX_2^2-dX_3^2-dX_4^2

is straightforward enough ("The Foundation of the General Theory of
Relativity"), it is pythagorean, but he makes a mathematical blunder
when he makes one of these terms to be time. Time is not a vector,
it has no additive inverse.
In simple terms, that means that although you can return to where you
were, it is impossible to return to when you were.
GR manipulates symbols as if you could, and departs from
physical constraints into a world of make-believe, hiding the
fundamentals in a welter of symbols that do not represent reality.
If you enjoy fiction, then read it. The library shelves are full,
but librarians tend to put anything that looks remotely mathematical
in the wrong section.
