Each of us would write a different version of what physics is about
(more or less adequate) but no one is entitle to decide for all.

The ones who claim metaphysical irrelevance are the ones, unwary, full
entangled with it

In the ancient times there were physics but no math

This is what thorns you: physical systems are what they are and are under
observation: through observations we cumulate a increasing knowledge of the
physical system that can lead to a good enough knowledge sufficient to
interact with the system with some efficiency:
the relevance of this is that the physicality of ourselves and the
physicality of the system under observation are the dominants in the
interactive process; our mind is just a mean of connection and elaboration.
