So ya don't like the way Purcell's porcupines are illustrated.

What charges carriers?
Experiment 1
Shine a laser pointer across the the beam of an automobile head lamp.
Record all details of the fray that ensues as the two beams fight over
who has rights to the space where the beams intersect.

Experiment 2
Have a friend shine a torch skyward on a foggy night.
Climb up the shaft of light and measure the distance to the ground
where you hands start to win over the beam in your struggle to
occupy the space.

You are trying to build a brick house where you are surrounded by
ready made ingredrients.

That's OK... when limestone gobbles up a brick house they call
it a sink hole.
