Close. The photons don't get smaller but they do get further apart from
each other. The density of photons falls like the square of the
distance just like you would expect, the total number of photons
staying constant and the surface area growing like the square of the
distance. The fact that we can still focus an image of a distant star
is a testament to how many photons are emitted by stars. When the star
is so distant that we really do only collect a handful of photons
during the exposure, then in fact we have a hard time imaging the star.
