1D is only a self-referential point, 2D is planar with a separation and
3D is the composite of planes and separations. There are no more
places except that time exists(which indicates a movement or event).
Clearly, time describes an on-off existence at a place, but it also is
the continuum connecting places of existence through comparisons of
different on-off states or 'movements'. It remains arbitrary whether a
place moves with time (so says Einstein - in so many words).

The only other thing I can suggest is a study of self-symmetry at
different scales (Mandlebrot and/or Julia sets - or more). I am not
sure of that relation to string theories, but it seems that it may be
found to be applicable.
