Sometimes I ask a question that is really meant as a statement. An
example is in take 12 where Kees Roos was kind enough to correct my
error. Other times I ask a question more as a challenge, as in take 14
where Bill Hobba stepped to the plate for mainstream science. Seldom do
I ever ask a real honest to goodness question.
This is not because I have no questions. Rather, it is because I find
the answers to them myself, either through internet search engines, or
by immersing myself in the literature. Occasionally I have a question
that I cannot find an answer to.
When I hold a magnet near a piece of iron, gradually approaching the
iron, there comes a time when a sudden attraction pulls the magnet
abruptly to the iron. Whereas with the earth attractor (read gravity) I
can gradually approach the earths surface with no sudden increase in
apparent force. OK. This can be explained by the idea that the earth
attractor acts from the earth's center and we are on the surface of
earth, where no abruptness occurs. Whereas, the surface of the iron is
immediately near the magnet and is the focus of the attraction. This
difference however, is part of the source of my dillemma.
Imagine a metallic metal block, 1 cubic meter in volume. All sides are
machine surfaced flat. Imagine a balance scale secured to one surface
of the block, the components of which are non magnetic. Now imagine
that the block has been rendered strongly magnetic and is located in
space, away from any influencing so called "gravitational" objects. The
balance scale is located in a position where the magnetic field from
the block influences each balance pan equally.
We place a kilogram iron (nickel, cobalt) weight in one pan and the
weight is pulled down by the magnetic field. We place another kilogram
weight in the other pan and it too is pulled toward the blocks surface.
So that now we have a perfectly balanced scale. We remove one of the
weights and replace it with iron filings until the scale is balanced
once again. In so doing we have determined the mass of the iron
filings, using the magnetic field of the block.
Is this feasible? Thanks.
