I do not want to lose you over mathematical jargon.
Points in an affine space can be associated with a vector, but this is
not the issue.
Just answer me this question: Is there any physical sense in a negative
frequency?

Yes. Run a tape backwards.
Mathematically, an example:

>From Doppler,

c+v
f' = f---------
c
1-2
f' = 1 * -------------
1
= -1

When v = -2, the source is receding from the observer.
c and v are of course vectors.
t is not a vector, it has no inverse.
