Not everyone has your difficulty doing simple things. I've been
running linux since kernel version 1.1.59 (circa 1994) without any
of the problems you seem to have.

That's strange... I've been running slackware 3.0 with a CDE
desktop for more than six years. I haven't compiled a kernel
since 2.0.38. Works just fine.
