It's the default case. It is what is left when the alternatives are
eliminated.

Let's analyze this:
"In the beginning, God created the heaven and the Earth"
The sentence ASSUMES a beginning, it ASSUMES a God.
In the sciences, we do not assume.
The Earth exists. That's not an assumption, that's observable.
Without it we would not be having a discussion.
Heaven exists. That's the place where all the other things that exist
but not Earth are. It's an old word for "Universe".
Time exists. That's not an assumption either. We grow old.
But does a beginning exist?
"Forever and ever, Amen".
There is a beginning, but no end?
How odd. What a strange belief.
The Universe will continue on for eternity, but it had a beginning?
I'm not taking your word for it. I'm not taking some ancient philosopher's
word for it either.
Choose... a beginning AND an end, or no beginning and no end.
I'm not assuming either pair, but I find it illogical that there should
be a beginning without an end.
What's wrong with no beginning and a real end?
That's just as illogical too.
" Hope "... in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection...
The only thing that is sure and certain is the hope, there is nothing
sure or certain about a resurrection.
You hope there was a beginning, you hope there will be no end.
You had a beginning, you will have an end. That's cold hard reality.
Why do you hope?
Why do you ask science to agree with your religious views,
when science deals in cold hard facts only?
You seek reassurance from learned men that your hopes are valid.
Truth is, they don't know any more than you, but like to pretend they do,
so that you'll give them m.o.n.e.y.
I can't reassure your hopes. I deal in facts only. I might be able to
if you give me m.o.n.e.y. In fact I'm sure I could, but beiong honest
I have to tell you that I'm only telling you what you want to hear
because you hired me to do so. Otheriwise I'll tell you the truth for free.
Go and kneel in prayer, sing praises to your god, perform your magical
rites, put m.o.n.e.y in the collection plate and hope someone will listen.
I'm sure the priest will reassure you. He wants your m.o.n.e.y as well.
Humble yourself. Tell your god "Ooooh, you are so big!" and bow
like a Moslem, head to the ground in obeisance.
Ask him about balloons. Let me know if you get an answer,
he works in mysterious ways and science is about solving mysteries in
a logical and consistent manner. Put in lots of m.o.n.e.y.
If you do not get an answer, it's no good asking me whether there
was a beginning and no end, I'm not your god. I will though, for
m.o.n.e.y.
Make up your own story about expanding balloons and big bangs
that started them, or spread the rumours someone else started.
Sorry to pop your balloon, but it was a hot air balloon anyway.
Androcles.
