Gerald - this is not how science works. Your complaints about SR are
merely complaints about the absence of a deeper structure underneath
that would "explain" things like, say, time dilation or the constancy
of the speed of light. People are looking for those. In the meantime,
the way science works is that given the alternative:

1. a theory which assumes the speed of light is constant while awaiting
for good underlying models (the yet-nonexistent quantum gravity or
whatever),

vs.

2. a theory which assumes a nondetectable aether which behaves
_completely_ unlike anything else in the known universe as the basis
for the observed constancy of the speed of light,

....scientists will accept (1) over (2). That's how it works. We simply
cannot afford invisible pink elephants anymore.
